Babylonian Tiles History

After playing keyboards for several Los Angeles area post-punk bands since '82, Bryna Golden took matters into her own hands and formed Babylonian Tiles in the late '80s as a vehicle for her songwriting. By 1989 the line-up was complete with Tim Thayer on guitar, Brian Schreiber on drums, Marcus Mindte on bass, and Bryna on keyboards and singing lead vocals. The band began gigging extensively, making a name for itself throughout Southern California.

Influenced by such psychedelic/progressive icons as Syd Barrett, The Pretty Things, Love, Soft Machine, King Crimson and dark modern bands like Bauhaus, The Damned, The Stranglers, and Wire, the band also incorporated into its music complex rhythms and Middle Eastern motifs. It was only natural for Babylonian Tiles to create a new dark psychedelic sound which became known as 'Acid-Goth'.

Dark Lord Rob of the Psychedelic Veil wrote, "...

Babylonian Tiles... are deliberately forging a bridge between the 'Ann Rice and Robert Smith' crowd and the 'Ultimate Spinach and Iron Butterfly' purists, mixing Goth and Psych stylings and making it work... I'll venture a guess that your reaction to the above statement is the same as mine was initially: 'Oh my God NO!' Fear not, oh fellow freak, the Tiles make music that is wholeheartedly and unabashedly psychedelic, from the gritty fuzz of Tim Thayer's guitar to the Ummagumma keys and disaffected Nicodelic vocals of Bryna Golden. Their two CDs, Green Midnight Glow and Basking in the Sun at Midnight are deliciously dark and full of the serpentine melodiousness that we all love so dearly. This is not beat-box Bauhaus; this is midnight maniac music!"

Babylonian Tiles debut CD, "Basking In The Sun At Midnight" was released on the Nate Starkman and Sons label in 1992. It was the band's first studio collaboration with engineer and producer Fred Drake. Shortly after, bassist Marcus Mindte left to pursue his corporate destiny, (hey, the band life's not for everyone) and was replaced by Richard Cleary. 1994 saw the re-release of "Basking In The Sun At Midnight" on Saint Thomas Records and the Tiles working again with Fred Drake, this time at his Joshua Tree studio, Rancho De La Luna, to record the next CD, "Green Midnight Glow". The band then hit the road in 1995 for its first U.S. tour.

In 1997 "Green Midnight Glow" was released by Saint Thomas Records. Bassist Christian Ramsey joined on shortly after and Babylonian Tiles was soon recording its first Amboy Dukes cover, "Death Is Life/Saint Philips Friend'", which was distributed free at the '97 Ann Arbor Hash Bash to kick off Babylonian Tiles' second US tour.

The "Death Is Life/Saint Phillips Friend" single caught the attention of it's composer, original Amboy Dukes guitarist/songwriter Steve Farmer who then performed with the band onstage in Detroit during their '98 U.S. Tour. In early '98, Farmer also joined Babylonian Tiles in the recording studio, adding vocals and guitar work to what would have been a Babylonian Tiles CD entitled, "Journey To the Dark Side Of The Mind", One of the tracks which would have appeared on the CD was another Babylonian Tiles version of an Amboy Dukes song, 'Ivory Castles', as well as new original material co-written by Farmer and Golden. One of these songs "Shadows On The Wall" was released on 7" vinyl and distributed free at the '98 Ann Arbor Hash Bash. Unfortunately, due to an unresolved dispute which led to a split with the record label, the band sadly decided to leave the project unfinished and unreleased.

In 2000, Babylonian Tiles joined the roster of Pangea Music International recording artists to release it's third CD, "Teknicolour Aftermath", The CD continued the band's adventures into its world of Progressive Psychedelic Darkness, and featured liner notes by Ultimate Spinach and "Hip Death Goddess" creator, the original Psychedelic Warrior, Ian Bruce-Douglas, who upon hearing Babylonian Tiles, was inspired to say this: "Please check out the BABYLONIAN TILES website. Why? They did a wonderful cover of one of my ULTIMATE SPINACH tunes, 'Ballad Of The Hip Death Goddess' ...and as far as I'm concerned, Bryna Golden sang it far more wonderfully than the original. She IS the Hip Death Goddess. Long may she wave." That same year, the band set out on it's fourth U.S. tour in support of "Teknicolour Aftermath". That tour saw the band appear for the first time as a three piece with Golden, Schreiber and Thayer. The tour and new format was a huge success and Babylonian Tiles remains as a trio to this day. The band hit the road again in 2001 for it's fifth U.S. tour.

In 2003 Distort-O-Sound Records re-packaged and re-released "Teknicolour Aftermath" with a bonus track to coincide with Babylonian Tiles' performance in Las Vegas at the Convergence 9 convention.

After taking a two year performance hiatus, Babylonian Tiles is back playing shows around Southern California, working on new material for future recordings and re-connecting with fans both old and new.
